Retrofit Elevator in Espoo
Espoo grew rapidly in the 1960s–1980s, when thousands of apartment buildings were constructed in the Tapiola, Matinkylä, Leppävaara, and Espoonlahti residential areas. Many of these 3–5 story buildings were built without elevators. An aging population and accessibility requirements make retrofit elevators a timely investment. We manage elevator projects in Espoo from start to finish — from feasibility assessment to project planning, procurement, and installation supervision.

Espoo-specific considerations
Espoo's apartment building stock consists mainly of prefabricated concrete construction from the 1960s–1980s. These buildings are often structurally well-suited for retrofit elevator installation — stairwells are wider than in Helsinki's older buildings, and the structures can support the elevator's load well.
The Tapiola area is an architecturally significant ensemble where retrofit elevators require particular sensitivity to the original architecture. In other Espoo areas, solutions are typically more straightforward.
Espoo Building Control has actively supported retrofit elevator projects. The permit process is smooth, and the city encourages housing associations to improve accessibility.
Costs — Espoo
In Espoo's 1960s–1980s apartment buildings, a retrofit elevator typically costs €130,000–250,000 per stairwell. Prefabricated buildings are often less expensive than older stone buildings.
Subsidies & grants — Espoo
Espoo discontinued its municipal elevator subsidy in 2021. Only the VARKE state subsidy (35%) is available in Espoo. Housing companies should also consider VARKE's accessibility grant for ancillary improvements.
Since 2025, the state elevator subsidy is administered by VARKE (formerly ARA). A grant decision must be obtained before construction begins.
